"SELF"

Marc Quinn was born in 1964 and is a British artist. He studied history and the history of art at Robinson College in Cambridge whilst he worked as an assistant to the sculptor Barry Flanagan. Quinn has exhibited exhibitions including Sonsbeed ’93, Arnhem in 1993, Give and Take, Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2001 and so on.
Quinn’s wide-range of work displays of the body and what defines the human life such as spiritual and physical, surface and depth, intellectual and sexual. Whilst using a variety of materials, from ice and blood to glass, marble or lead, he develops into experimental, conceptual works that are mostly figurative.

Self (2001)
Marc Quinn’s project called “Self” is currently ongoing. It is a frozen sculpture of his head made from 4.5 litres of his own blood taken from his body over a period of 5 months. This cast called “self” was created in his late 20s in 1991 and he continues to do the same process every 5 years, each of which documents Quinn’s own physical transformation and deterioration. His work is carefully maintained in a refrigeration unit. This piece was bought by Charles Saatchi in 1991 for £13,000 and was exhibited when he opened his new gallery in London in 2003.

19.01.11. VISUAL DESIGN.

Firstly I'd like to say I've decided to post this little bit about my visual design project because it shows me using a different medium on a strange 'canvas'

Previously in Visual Design we got set a task to present our essays in a different format. After exploring many ways, and creating many ideas some of which involve studio lights and stencils to project my essay. So in the end i settled with my second idea involved a lot of lipstick and a male figure.

As you can possibly read from my images, I chosen to present my essay on Neville Brody in this style. I found out about this idea from a comedian called Russel Howard and his comment as simple as "My show will be now shown on Dave, not my dad Dave but the channel Dave, it's not like I can write all my jokes on my dad". I simply chose to use black and red as my palette because they contrast well together and are most visible when taking a photo. I used the black lipstick overall throughout and the red lipstick for important words such as "Neville Brody" or "The FACE magazine". Even though my male model must have been feeling awkward, I had fun using a different medium on such a strange 'canvas'

18.01.11- FIRST SCULPTURE SESSION

Cast of my hand with a heart key ring in the center.
Today was my first lesson, and i was late - due to buses (: We started off by making a molding using clay, we could use anything to mold so I decided to use my hand because i've chosen to use the human body through out my art projects and lessons. As you can see in the image, I made an imprint of my hand into the clay with a heart shape keyring. I then made a wall using plastic and extra clay to stick together. After mixing molding powder (I've forgotten the name) with water I was then able to create my cast by pouring the mixture onto my class imprint and left to solidify.
Once hardened, i removed the clay from the mold and made some finishing touches by sanding down sharp edges and removed excess clay.

I decided to take this further by trying out a new technique using a vacuum sealed machine. I placed my cast onto the machine faced up and pulled the handle to lower it, then I cut out the correct size (roughly A3) of clear 1.5mm of plastic and placed onto the machine. I turned the machine on and heated the plastic for the correct amount of time to whatever the thickness was - in this case it heated up for 30seconds. Immediately after heating i pulled the handle to raise my cast so it's just touching the plastic. Flicked a switch and turned on the vacuum seal which wrapped the plastic tight around the cast. By doing this, i learned a wonderful new skill on how to make molds quickly and repeatedly by using my vacuum sealed cut out.

After my delicious lunch, I wanted to experiment a bit further. I wanted to make a cast of my hand! To do this i created a tube container using tape and flexible plastic. I then placed it into 3cm of clay to secure it and made a green jelly like solution and poured into my container. After putting a thin coat of vaseline on my hands, i made a pose and put it into the mold. After waiting 15minutes for it to set, i gently took my hand out. Making a mixture of powder and water, i then poured it into the mold and waited for another hour or so.
Cast of my hand.
After pealing away the green mold I revealed my hand. I think this technique exceptionally well considering it picks up each wrinkle and crease in my hand.
